The organisation

Zhaotong Pucui Farmers’ Professional Planting Cooperative has been implementing projects in Zhaotong, Yunnan for many years, planting large numbers of trees and benefiting thousands of local households. Located in a mountainous area once affected by severe ecological degradation, the region has faced challenges such as abandoned farmland, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and drought due to labor migration and declining forest cover.

The cooperative aims to increase farmer incomes, improve agricultural skills and environmental awareness, and restore the local ecosystem through long-term agroforestry and vegetation restoration efforts.

The cooperative’s staff has been involved in tree planting projects since 2013, and decided to create a cooperative in 2019. Since its creation, the cooperative has already planted more than 1 million trees, inc. fruit and “environmental” trees.

To achieve this, it focuses on three key actions: developing agroforestry systems to boost income and land efficiency; providing farmer training on environmental protection and regenerative practices; and restoring barren land through large-scale afforestation to improve biodiversity, reduce erosion, and strengthen ecosystem resilience.
