SBTi Version 2.0: From Climate Commitments to Climate Delivery
The Science-Based Targets initiative SBTi has released Version 2.0 of its Corporate Net-Zero Standard, marking an important evolution in corporate climate action. The message is clear: setting a target is no longer enough. Companies must now show how they will deliver, how they will govern progress, how they will engage their value chains, and how they will take responsibility for ongoing emissions while continuing to reduce their own footprint.
For businesses, this is a practical and strategic shift. SBTi Version 2.0 moves from ambition to implementation. It recognizes that companies operate in complex realities: supply chains are difficult to control, low-carbon technologies are not always available at scale, and Scope 3 emissions often depend on suppliers, customers, logistics partners, and market systems far beyond a company’s direct control. Rather than ignoring these barriers, the new Standard introduces a “best-efforts” framework: companies are expected to use every lever available, disclose barriers transparently, and keep strengthening their plans over time.
At the heart of Version 2.0 is a more action-oriented structure. Companies are expected to connect science-based targets to transition planning, governance, capital allocation, procurement, operations, supplier engagement, and progress reporting. Near-term targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 remain central. Scope 3 target setting becomes especially important for larger companies. The Standard also introduces clearer expectations around transition plans, base-year assessments, third-party assurance, progress reviews, and ongoing emissions responsibility.
This last point is especially relevant. SBTi Version 2.0 makes clear that companies must continue prioritizing real emissions reductions across their operations and value chains. At the same time, it recognizes a role for high-integrity carbon credits and broader climate contributions as a complement, not a substitute, to decarbonization. This is where credible, transparent, and measurable nature-based solutions can play an important role.
EcoMatcher’s role: transparency, engagement, and credible climate contributions
EcoMatcher supports companies on the human, technological, and transparency side of climate action. We do not replace carbon accounting, science-based target setting, or formal SBTi validation. Instead, EcoMatcher helps companies activate and communicate part of their climate journey in a way that is visible, traceable, engaging, and credible.
Through EcoMatcher, companies can plant trees transparently and track them individually using TreeTracker and ForestTracker. Each tree can be connected to data such as location, species, planting date, and the person or community involved in planting and caring for it. This matters because the next phase of corporate sustainability will require more than broad claims. It will require evidence, accountability, and storytelling grounded in data.
For companies implementing SBTi-aligned strategies, EcoMatcher can support several practical needs.
First, EcoMatcher helps companies engage employees, customers, and stakeholders in climate action in a transparent and engaging way. SBTi Version 2.0 emphasizes governance, transition planning, and implementation. But implementation only works when people understand the journey. Tree planting, when done transparently and responsibly, makes climate action tangible. Employees can visit trees in 3D, customers can receive trees as meaningful gifts, and companies can create sustainability programs that people can see and share.
Second, EcoMatcher supports value-chain and stakeholder engagement. Many companies struggle with Scope 3 because their emissions sit across suppliers, customers, distribution networks, and use-phase activities. EcoMatcher’s tools can help companies turn sustainability from an internal reporting exercise into a broader engagement platform. Tree gifting, loyalty programs, employee rewards, and customer campaigns can all become ways to bring stakeholders into the climate journey.
Third, EcoMatcher helps companies strengthen transparency. With growing scrutiny of sustainability claims, companies need to show what they are doing, where it is happening, and who benefits. EcoMatcher’s TreeTech platform, including GPS mapping, digital tree profiles, blockchain-based TreeChain records, 3D forest visualization, and impact reporting tools, helps companies communicate impact with greater confidence.
The role of TREES+
A key part of EcoMatcher’s support for companies is TREES+, developed with Value Network Ventures VNV. TREES+ combines EcoMatcher’s transparent tree-planting technology with carbon-certified projects, where projects carry carbon certification from Verra or Gold Standard, and each tree can be tracked and managed through EcoMatcher’s platform.
This is highly relevant in the context of SBTi Version 2.0. The Standard recognizes a role for high-integrity carbon credits and climate contributions under the concept of ongoing emissions responsibility, while making clear that such action must complement, not replace, emissions reductions. TREES+ is designed for companies that want credible, certified climate contributions while also benefiting from EcoMatcher’s unique transparency and engagement layer.
Carbon credits can sometimes feel abstract. TREES+ helps make them more understandable and connected. Companies can support carbon-certified projects while also seeing the trees, the locations, and the communities behind the work. This creates a bridge between carbon finance, nature restoration, stakeholder engagement, and transparent reporting.
From compliance to competitive advantage
The new SBTi Standard also points to a broader business reality. Net zero is no longer only a sustainability department topic. It is becoming a boardroom, finance, procurement, risk, and reputation topic. Companies that take climate action seriously can strengthen resilience, prepare for regulation, improve stakeholder trust, and build stronger relationships with customers and employees.
EcoMatcher helps companies make this transition more visible and engaging. A science-based target may begin as a technical commitment, but it must become part of the company’s culture. Transparent tree planting, carbon-certified projects, digital tracking, employee engagement, and customer-facing sustainability tools can help turn climate strategy into lived experience.
This is especially important because SBTi Version 2.0 emphasizes continuous improvement. Companies are expected to assess progress, disclose barriers, update plans, and set new targets for future cycles. The climate journey is not a one-time statement. It is a long-term operating discipline.
How SBTi Version 2.0 will shape EcoMatcher’s next improvements
For EcoMatcher, the launch of SBTi Version 2.0 is not only important for our customers; it is also a driver for our own product roadmap.
The direction of the Standard confirms many principles EcoMatcher has been building around for years: transparency, credible data, traceability, stakeholder engagement, and measurable climate contribution. At the same time, it challenges us to keep improving.
In the coming period, EcoMatcher will further strengthen its platform to support companies in this new era of climate delivery. Improvements will focus on deeper reporting, clearer links between tree-planting programs and corporate sustainability objectives, enhanced support for TREES+, better tools for stakeholder engagement, and continued development of technologies that make impact more transparent, engaging and accessible.
As companies adapt to SBTi Version 2.0, EcoMatcher will continue evolving to help them communicate and activate their climate strategies responsibly. This includes making it easier for companies to distinguish between tree planting for engagement, restoration, biodiversity, community impact, carbon-certified projects, and broader climate contributions.
The future of corporate climate action will not be defined by claims alone. It will be defined by collective action, evidence, transparency, and continuous improvement. SBTi Version 2.0 raises the bar. EcoMatcher is ready to help companies meet that moment, with TreeTech, TREES+, and further improvements coming soon.
