Does EcoMatcher offer “official” carbon credits?
Trees sequester carbon; that is not a secret. However, to “officially” offset carbon, specific ‘carbon credit rights’ are required. Typically, the process of certifying tree planting projects for “official” carbon offsetting is complicated, labor-intensive, and unnecessarily expensive for our vetted tree planting partners. More specifically, you would have to e.g. set up a special trust via projects such as a REDD+ project. Moreover, such a project’s set-up takes multiple years and is relatively expensive (up to several million dollars). Those certified projects may be “official” in general, still they do not offer the same level of transparency as EcoMatcher is offering. As a certified B corporation, EcoMatcher believes in accountability. We are convinced that investing in e.g. trustworthy blockchain technology, transparent tree planting is better than spending money on certification projects. With this approach, EcoMatcher can also ensure that our vetted tree planting partners benefit with fair compensation, thereby taking responsibility in addressing inequalities around the world.
